When I was growing up in Hong Kong, I never really liked reading very much. Mostly because I was too lazy but also because I was too busy watching TV. But that didn’t mean I didn’t daydream or have wonderful fantasies – mostly about me being a part of whatever TV show I happened to be addicted to at the time.
In Australia, I discovered the joys of reading and my horizons were broadened. To my parents’ pleasant surprise, I would often wander up to the local library on Sunday afternoons by myself and bring home armfuls of books and I read whatever my Dad was reading. Our favourites included Erle Stanley Gardner (creator and author of all the Perry Mason novels) and Sidney Sheldon.
In high school, I loved Jane Austen and Harper Lee (“To Kill A Mockingbird”) and I enjoyed creative writing in our English classes. However, as much as I loved reading and writing, I never thought I would see my writing in print, open to all the world. And now there’s the internet! Wow! So in addition to my occasional blog posts, I have now added fanfiction to my obsession.
If you don’t know what fanfiction is, don’t despair! I know exactly how you feel because I was only introduced to this universe very recently and I still can’t believe I have now joined it! To sum it up very simply, it is where amateur writers create their own stories based on characters from TV shows, movies, cartoons, etc. For me, my fan universe has been all about the TV show White Collar and so it only stands to reason that my first attempt at writing fanfiction would be based on characters from this show. It should also not be unexpected that the authors I follow are friends I have made in the Twitterverse through this show.
And so I bring you, some fanfic to add to your reading list:
